TRIGGER

Stepping Stones: Teams compete to cross a designated area using paper "sky" a great team-building exercise.

Material
  • Draw stars and clouds (obstacles) on construction paper
  • Dice

Steps
  • Children use the stars to cross the room without touching the floor, which acts as “ clouds “.
  • Ask the children to disperse the stars and clouds on the floor across the room.
  • Divide the children in two teams.
  • The child roll the dice to move.

  • Active/Physical Play: 
    • Players use cushions, books, or balance stones (often with light-up features) to cross a room without touching the floor, which acts as "lava". 
  • Team Building/Cooperative: 
    • Teams work together to move a limited set of "stones" (mats) across a designated area.

GAME – JO-DARTS

Materials:
White board, dry erase marker, suction cup darts

Steps:
  • Draw a large outline of Joseph on the white board. 
  • Using lines, divide Joseph up into various sections. 
  • Write a phrase in each section and the amount of points a team will gain or lose. 
  • Divide your class into two teams. 
  • Alternate each team throwing a dart at Joseph to get points. 
  • Whichever team has the most points at the end wins! 

Talk with your class about the Life Point and say that Joseph honored God when he forgave his brothers.

CRAFT

Joseph’s life

Material
  • A sheet of blank paper
  • A pencil
  • Four different colour markers
  • Darker colour marker for writing
  • Scissors

Steps
  • Make your paper a perfect square by folding the sheet of paper across diagonally lining up the two sides.
  • Fold the extra unneeded paper and make a crease with your finger. 
  • Cut it off and you have a square.
  • Fold the first set of corners. 
  • Fold all for corners towards the center of the page.
    Fold second set of corners. 
  • Flip over paper with folded corner. 
  • Fold the corners in the same as step one.
  • Fold the square in half.

Making it 3D.
  • Slide your fingers under all four flaps using both your thumbs and pointing finger. 
  • Pinch pointer and thumb together and push them towards the center.
  • Choose Draw Jacob (Joseph’s father) Brothers (Josephs brothers) Pharaoh (the king) Potiphar ( the master) on each section and write the name of the inside the section
  • Make the the numbered layer. 
  • Flip the person side of the cootie catcher so its facing the table. 
  • Number 1 to 8 each triangle using a dark coloured marker. Placement of the numbers does not matter.
  • Make the final layer. 
  • Fold out each numbered triangle. 
  • Write a part of Joseph’s story for each person. (When you play you can ask them to which person it goes.

  • Jacob (The Father)

    • Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other 12 sons and gave him a beautiful, colorful coat to show he was the favorite. When Joseph's brothers brought the coat back covered in blood, Jacob was heartbroken, believing a wild animal had killed his son.
  • The 11 Brothers (The Siblings)

    • Jealous of Joseph’s special coat and his dreams of them bowing down to him, the brothers plotted to get rid of him. They threw him into a deep, dark pit and then sold him as a slave to traders heading for Egypt for 20 pieces of silver.
  • The Pharaoh (The King)

    • Pharaoh had troubling dreams about seven fat cows being eaten by seven skinny cows that no one could explain. He called Joseph from prison, who interpreted the dreams as a warning of seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine, leading Pharaoh to make Joseph a powerful leader in Egypt.
  • Potiphar (The Master)
    • Potiphar was a wealthy Egyptian official who bought Joseph as a slave. He saw that God was with Joseph and put him in charge of his entire household. Even after    Joseph was later falsely accused and sent to prison, he remained faithful and hardworking.

Stepping Stones (Lava game)

Material
  • Cardboard to draw stars and clouds
  • Draw 6 stars  
  • Draw 6 clouds (obstacles) for obstacles
  • Dice
  • Candies
 
Steps
  • Divide the children into two teams - one team/star, other team/clouds.
  • Number the stars / clouds 1 to 6.
  • Children use the stars to cross the room without touch the clouds and floor (which acts as the sky).
  • Ask the children to disperse the stars and clouds on the floor across the room.
  • Divide the children in two teams.
  • Each child in the team take turns to roll the dice and then jump on whichever number the stars or clouds matches the dots on the dice.
  • Keep taking it in turns until the team has collected all six of their items.
  • If they roll a number the team has already “got” they don’t get to jump along that time.
  • Candies to the winning team.

CREATIVE SNACK

Egyptian Pyramid Snacks

Material
  • Cheese
  • Roce Crispies treats

Steps
  • Using the cheese or rice crispy cut out bricks.
  • Have the children build a pyramid.

OBJECT LESSON

From bitterness to reconciliation

Material
  • Slices of lemon
  • Small town of sugar
  • Spoons

Steps
  • Ask the children take a bite of a plain lemon slice. 
    • It will be sour and bitter, much like the feelings Joseph’s brothers had when they were jealous, of the bitterness  Joseph could have held onto after being sold into slavery.
  • Then, ask the them if a second lemon slice into the sugar and take a bite.
    • The lemon represents the bitterness of holding a grudge. 
    • The sugar-coated lemon represents the sweetness of forgiveness. Joseph chose the ‘sweet’ path, allowing his family to be reunited.
