Biography
Genesis 12-22
A long time ago, there was a man named Abram who lived in a place called Haran with his wife, Sarai. They had many sheep and cattle, but sadly, they had no children. One day, God spoke to Abram and made a wonderful promise. He told Abram to look up at the stars and count them. God said that just as there are many stars in the sky, Abram would have many descendants.
Abram was confused because he and Sarai were very old. They had waited a long time for a child. But God reassured Abram, saying, “Do not be afraid, for I will be your shield, and your reward will be great.” God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, which means “father of many nations,” and Sarai’s name to Sarah. Many years passed, and still, Abraham and Sarah had no children. But God kept His promise. When Sarah was very old, she gave birth to a baby boy named Isaac, which means “laughter,” because everyone laughed with joy at the miracle of his birth.

One day, God tested Abraham’s faith by asking him to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham was heartbroken but trusted God completely. Just as he was about to obey, God stopped him and provided a ram to sacrifice instead. This showed that God was pleased with Abraham’s faith. Abraham became the father of many nations, just as God promised, and his descendants were as numerous as the stars in the sky. Abraham’s story teaches us about faith, trust, and the incredible promises of God. This story can be found in the Bible, primarily in the book of Genesis, chapters 12-22. It highlights the themes of faith, obedience, and God’s faithfulness.
Activities
Star Gazing and Counting
Take the children outside on a clear night or use a starry sky projection. Have them try to count the stars, relating it to God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars. Discuss how God keeps His promises, even when they seem impossible.
Journey Mapping
Create a simple map showing Abraham’s journey from Ur to Canaan. Have children trace the route with their fingers or use toy figures to act out the journey. Discuss the faith it took for Abraham to leave his home and follow God’s instructions.
Promise Tree Craft
Have children create a “Promise Tree” by tracing their hand and arm on paper to form the trunk and branches. On each finger (branch), have them write or draw one of God’s promises to Abraham. Discuss how God fulfilled these promises and how He keeps His promises to us today.
